How I slept through the night with star-fish Bella

I read in an article during the week that breaking wind in front of your husband leads to a longer relationship, but I have my reservations about that, I think my method to a lasting relationship is much more pleasing for both of us.

If there was the best companion in Ireland competition, then I’m sure I’d win it! Once the kiddies are tucked up in bed tonight, my husband will get to experience my newly found skill. Now, now, calm down everyone, all very respectable, all very above board.

Last Saturday, along with 15 others I learned doTERRA’s aromatouch technique. So, you are probably wondering why a marketing person needs to know aromatouch technique right? Well first, let me explain the effect it had on me and then what it is.

Let’s start with the fact that on the night I received the technique as part of the training I slept well, and by that, I mean Bella my ‘healthy’ four-year-old laid out on my back asleep in starfish position, without me even noticing. It was Shaun the next morning who told me she was like a limpet stuck to me. Her limpet technique is nothing new, but I probably smelled great too, so she didn’t budge all night. But for me not to notice her even getting in the bed that night, demonstrates to me that the aromatouch technique had a relaxing effect on me.

It is a method developed by a doctor, who formulated the perfect blend and step by step application of pure essential oils to ensure the receiver gets maximum benefit of the powerful properties of the oils. To be honest, as the ‘giver’ I also receive the benefits, it’s an extremely calming and relaxing method that switches me off. The focus of the technique is on the head, neck, back, feet or just limited to hands for those bodies off limits!

What makes this touch technique unique and super effective is the quality of the oils used. These are therapeutic grade oils, guaranteed to contain 100% essential oil – no fillers or chemicals. Sourced responsibly from countries where the plants are native and harvested at just the right time to allow for their high quality. The manufacturer even pays their harvesters to keep the plants longer in the soil so they are at their most potent when picked.

The technique and the sequence of the oil application also makes it very special. Starting with a relaxing oil blend called Balance followed on by Lavender. Step 2, involves the immune system oils – Melaleuca and On Guard, followed by step 3, another special blend developed by Dr. Hill called AromaTouch and Deep Blue, to offer relief to muscle discomfort – Deep Blue gives an immediate tingling effect.

Finally, two of my favourite oils are applied Wild Orange and Peppermint, giving you a pep in your step at the end of the session.

So why did I go to all the trouble of driving out to Loughrea, Galway (60KM away) to do this? Well, while I have an interest in doTERRA oils, I have limited knowledge, this was one step closer to empowering me with techniques and essential oil usage. When will I use it? Look I’ll never be Mother Theresa, but if I can help a friend who is going through a hard time, or my spouse stressed from work, or a child who needs calming down, this has armed me with something kind and safe that I never considered before.

Just to add before I close this blog down, the lady who taught the class Rosie made it easy for me to pick this technique up quickly. She is knowledgeable, approachable has a great sense of humour, and she made it fun. The group who took the class was an interesting mix, people like me wanting to learn something new, people suffering from various aliments looking to complement their treatments with something uninvasive and effective to holistic health practitioners who want to use the power of essential oils to complement their offerings.

Another bonus is I can receive an aromatouch technique from my fellow class mates who attended the training when I feel I need it. As for Bella, my sleeping starfish she will go on jumping in to our bed to snuggle up to next to us maybe until she is 17 – I’m coming to terms with that!

Line up line up, your new aromatouch agony aunt is here!   anyone can do this one day course and share the power of oils and gift the power of touch to someone who needs it!

My biggest critic reaches out!

Some people are intrigued by my love of essential oils; some people are scared off ;)…. you know who you are!  But this isn’t a new interest, I have just chosen to talk about my experiences and enjoy sharing the essential oils.  I don’t have a problem sharing good quality products or recommending things that have worked for me, and that includes essential oils.

So when my biggest critic, wonderful husband of mine, who questions my love of essential oils quite frequently – ASKED yes ASKED, for doTERRA’s Melaleuca essential oil to be applied to his massive graze caused by a Helter Skelter slide, I nearly fell off my essential oil’s pew!

He has allowed me to use essential oils on him.  He loves the peppermint on the back of his neck, likes the smell of Lavender at night – but he isn’t so keen on the Wild Orange (I have no idea why?).

A week ago, he sustained a nasty graze on his arm after taking Bella down a Helter Skelter slide. Off he went on a flight to Sri Lanka (in pain), came home a week later – it was still red and angry (his arm, not him).  I asked him if he would allow me to do the honor and put some doTERRA Melaleuca on the graze – he consented.  Almost immediately he said the pain had subsided (the graze was on his elbow, so every movement was a killer), that night he admitted the graze was healing.   So the next day I applied it three times, it is well on the road to healing – bright pink skin. Happy husband.
So who would have thought a Helter Skelter slide would bring us closer together in the world of essential oils?  It will remain a staple in my medicine cupboard as a natural healer and marriage enhancer.
About Melaleuca
Melaleuca essential oil has over 92 different compounds and limitless applications. The leaves of the Melaleuca tree were used by the Aborigines of Australia for centuries. They would crush the leaves and inhale the oil to promote feelings of clear breathing and apply the leaves directly to the skin for a cooling effect. Melaleuca is best known for its purifying properties. It can be used to cleanse and purify the skin and nails and to support a healthy complexion. Taken internally, Melaleuca promotes healthy immune function*, and Melaleuca can be used on surfaces throughout the home to protect against environmental threats. Melaleuca is frequently used on occasional skin irritations to soothe the skin and diffusing Melaleuca will help purify and freshen the air.

Rethink your sports drink

I regularly go to workout classes and I always meet someone who dislikes the taste of water, they say it’s boring, dull etc… We are all aware of the benefits of water and most of us don’t drink enough.  In the past I have always added a dash of cordial or an ‘energy’ tablet to my sports drinks.  I stopped once I realised how much sugar they contained – after I discovered this diagram from Safefood:  M9403_Safefood_Drinks_Chart_V9

Then I came across doTERRA lemon oil after an aroma touch technique session,  I was offered a glass of water with one drop of lemon oil to help with hydration.  I was pleasantly surprised, not just by the taste but the smell of the water, it was invigorating and fresh.  It contained just one drop of doTERRA’s pure lemon oil.  It was beautifully potent because the oil is cold pressed from the rind of the lemon.  So not only did it add zest to my water, it was infused with Vitamin C.   I invested in a bottle, and a year later, it’s still a staple in my sports drinks and as part of my drinking water work routine!

For just 15. 58 euro a bottle it contains 400 drops, that’s a lot of flavour and drops packed into a 15ml bottle.  It’s small enough to put in your bag, pocket or leave on your desk.  Order a bottle from http://www.mydoterra.com/spoilyou

The added bonus is that my daughters also enjoy it in their water during the day!

How to find your sleep mojo

By pure coincidence I have had at least three ‘sleep’ conversations this week with three different people.  All to do with ‘rituals’ before sleeping.  I’ll cover these at the end of this blog.  I promised some friends who couldn’t make it to Ann-Marie’s sleep workshop last week that I would share some of her tips and insights from the workshop.  For those of you who don’t know Ann-Marie – she is an expert in a range of therapies including sports massage, Aromatouch treatment, Indian head massage and Bio energy Therapy. Her knowledge and experience is invaluable, and it is not surprising that her one hour workshop turned into two hours.

I attended this workshop because I lost my sleep mojo four years ago when my lovely, daughter came into the world.  Before then I’d hit the pillow and sleep for at least 8 hours straight.  Also, my mind has decided to keep on running well after I lie down in my comfy bed. Thoughts rush through my head like a raging river – have I done this? did I make that deadline? did I lock the back door etc…   If I could find just a few techniques that could remove some of my barriers to sleep, then I would be somewhere on the road to great quality sleep.

So back to the workshop – there were a variety of people at the workshop, nurses, business professionals and myself,  mum of two looking for natural ways to find my sleep mojo back.

Let’s start with some sleep causes – some obvious and some not so obvious….

Poor Sleep Hygiene – we are not talking dirty pillow slips here! but that a beautiful crisp, clean lavender scented pillow case will help you reach your sleep utopia.  There are poor habits like too much screen time in bed – mobile, e-reader, laptop, tv, all of these disrupt serotonin levels (a chemical that helps relay signals from one area of the brain to the other).  So our brain cells related to sleep can be negatively affected by low serotine levels.

Recommendation:
Get into the rhythm of working on simple habits and practices to assist reaching that blissful sleep state.  To be honest I was aware of  some of these already –  but I never practiced them, so this workshop was the nudge I needed for me to get my act together.

  • 30 minutes before you get into bed –  turn off any distractors such as TV, PC, Mobile. Give yourself those 30 minutes to wind down, even if it’s just building this into time spent cleansing your face, brushing your teeth.
  • Avoid caffeine, alcohol or other stimulants.

High Levels of Geopathic Stress  –  Ann-Marie got me here, I honestly never heard of this.   These are bodily stresses that derive from the place where one lives or works.  The Earth has a natural electromagnetic field.  This field is distorted as it passes through underground streams, mineral deposits and other obstructions, and the frequency changes to a level that is harmful to most humans.  Geopathic Stress in Ireland typically occurs along lines that follow the course of underground rivers.  Electromagnetic pollution can also magnify geopathic stress.

Recommendation:
Remove or move unneeded electrical appliances in your bedroom.  If you can’t, keep them unplugged when not in use.  If you sleep with your phone under your pillow – stop now and place it on the other side of the room.  Switch TV’s off from the wall, don’t just leave them on stand-by.  The biggest one that I took home is to turn off Wi-Fi at night  (although hubby is a bit disgruntled about that one).

At this stage of the workshop I was seriously keen to get onto the next phase of identifying what essential oils I can use to make quality sleep attainable.  Please be aware that it is not just the oils alone that will transform your sleep pattern, but a more holistic approach will certainly get you there.

Just on a side note, a discussion point during the workshop is the fact there is no regulation in the essential oils market.  So anyone can claim to have 100% pure essential oils products, even if 5% is pure plant extract and the rest are fillers or synthetics.  This is why doTERRA is now the leading therapeutic grade essential oil manufacturer in the world.  This grade guarantees 100% pure essential oil extract – their products are even used by Harley Street doctors to reduce bleeding during surgery.

The best part of the workshop was when I actually got a chance to smell and touch the oils, Ann-Marie very kindly offered us a sniff and drop of each oil.  So for sleep here is what Ann-Marie recommends:

Serenity Blend: a delicious blend of Lavender Flower, Cedarwood, Ho Wood Leaf, Ylang Ylang Flower, Marjoram Leaf, Roman Chamomile Flower, Vetiver Root, Vanilla Bean Absolute and Hawaiian Sandalwood Wood.  Inhale or apply to the bottom of the feet.  Used in conjuction with doTERRA Serenity Restful Complex Softgels for a more enhanced sleep.

One audience member shared his experience of when his wife had a new baby and sleep was one thing she was not getting.  So she was restless and heard every noise, whimper, and movement of the baby – so getting back to sleep was a challenge.  She started taking the Serenity Softgels, within days she was sleeping well, so much so she had to be awakened by her husband to breastfeed the baby.

Juniper Berry: Also know as the oil of nightmaresthis one really struck home with me.  My daughter suffers from night terrors, and Juniper is an excellent blend for calming, grounding effect on emotions.  It can be applied to the feet for quick absorption (our feet have large pours, so absorption is quick and effective). This is on my list this month – it comes in a roller ball format too, which is great for applying to children’s forehead and controlling the flow of oil if you are fumbling around in the dark and worried about applying too much.

Vetiver Oil: This is an anxiety warrior it seems (my term).  If like me your head is going 100 miles an hour while lying in bed, this is the one for you.  Apply on the back of the neck and base of the spine for a balancing, calming effect.   Ann-Marie shared a lovely story where she was at a wedding and the children were hyper active, so she applied (with the parents permission) Vetiver to the back of their necks.  The wedding photographer was really impressed with the calming affect and it made his job a lot easier!

For personal experiences from some friends and acquaintances that have used oils I have recommended please read on!  What I have learned from working with these oils is that not one oil fits all.  Every person is different and how they react or feel can differ, that’s why it’s important to try a variety of options until you find your ‘perfect match’.

Peppermint Oil: Initially this was to help with his respiratory issues, but he started to apply the oil to his forehead, temples and back of the neck just before he went to bed.  He slept five hours straight, for a man who hasn’t slept for more than two hours a time this was a massive achievement for him and he swears it’s the effect of the peppermint oil.

Wild Orange and LavenderWild Orange is a favourite of mine – a friend of mine rubs it on her feet, it’s part of her ‘ritual’ and time for ‘taking care of herself’.  She sprinkles lavender on her pillow for a sound, restful sleep.

I hope you found this blog useful. If you wish to try out any of these oils please reach out to me at spoil_you@outlook.com or just like my Facebook page for updates.
